The Cannonball Loop is one of Fitchburg’s most popular bike rides, offering a scenic journey through the University of Wisconsin Arboretum, a stop at the popular Velo UnderRound, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy local food and drinks along the way. Constructed on the abandoned Union Pacific Railroad corridor that runs from the Beltline to McKee Road, the trail offers a bicycle overpass on the Beltline Highway, making for an easy and safe crossing.
Ride through the UW arboretum and Velo UnderRound
Enjoy the beautiful scenery as you ride through the University of Wisconsin Arboretum. Wind through tallgrass prairies, savannas, wetlands, and several types of forests, showcasing flowering trees and shrubs. Widely recognized for its historic role in ecological restoration, the Arboretum features the oldest and most diverse collection of restored ecological communities in the world.
While on the path, make a stop at the well-known Velo UnderRound. This unique two-level interchange connects five regional trails, serving Fitchburg, Madison, Verona, and locations throughout Wisconsin and northern Illinois. The roundabout is the convergence of the Capital City State Trail, the Southwest Commuter Trail, Cannonball Path and Military Ridge Path, and the Badger State Trail running overhead.
