Local Pharmacist Recognized With Prestigious Award

Congratulations Thad Schumacher of Fitchburg Family Pharmacy! Thad was recently awarded the Bowl of Hygeia Award, universally considered one of the profession’s most prestigious awards. He was recognized as a pharmacist who possesses exceptional records of civic leadership and service in his community.

In his role at Fitchburg Family Pharmacy, Thad has worked closely with the Fitchburg Senior Center and Chamber of Commerce to provide lectures, medication reviews, and all-around care for older Fitchburg residents. He also initiated the effort to make Fitchburg Family Pharmacy a Spanish-English bilingual pharmacy, so it is accessible to more Fitchburg and Madison area residents.

Thad also offers free medication delivery by bicycle to patients’ home and workplaces, becoming well-known in Fitchburg as the #cyclingpharmacist, to ensure patients with limited access to transportation obtain their medication in a timely matter.

Thad also serves as the current Chair of the State Pharmacy Examining Board of Wisconsin, Treasurer for the Highlands of Seminole Neighborhood Association, and on the Advisory Board of Bike Fitchburg Inc. He has also been a long-time supporter of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, helping to raise thousands of dollars each year for the annual Bike for Boys and Girls Club event. Recently, Thad was appointed to the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County Board of Directors and  just the last month helped lead efforts to collect menstrual products for Madison Metropolitan School District students and hold a donation drive for Hurricane Harvey and Irma victims.

Thad breaks the mold of traditional community pharmacy practice. His dedication to his patients, in particular those who have been historically underserved, is unmatched. Congratulations on this prestigious honor, Thad!
