Fitchburg’s New Fire Station

Fitchburg is getting a new fire station! The new 22,000-square-foot station is located at 2931 Marketplace Drive, and is a significant upgrade from the 24 year old station on King James Way. The department has been transferring from the old station into the new one for the past month.

The more modern features in the new fire station are designed to meet the department and city’s needs for at least 50 years.

“When we looked into the design of this building, we wanted to obviously address the long-term need,” fire chief Joe Pulvermacher said. “The old station was built, I think, out of necessity and very quickly.”

The new location hasn’t led to slower response times and response times are also expected to improve. The combination of this station and the new east-side building opening in a few years will serve the city as a whole more efficiently. Efficiency in the station goes beyond the response times, with energy-saving features including a geothermal heating and cooling system.

One of the biggest benefits of the new station was the ability for the department to customize spaces for its needs. The kitchen now has a “commercial” feel to it, with space for interns – three of whom live at the station 24/7 – and firefighters to cook during their shifts. The centerpiece is a table the firefighters built themselves, which saved costs and allowed them to pay homage to the department’s history with all the different logos it’s had since it was created.

Other areas of the station getting upgrades are the exercise room, the day room, dispatch and training rooms and offices.

Join us September 8th for the ribbon cutting for Fire Station #2! The ceremony will start around 4:15pm, followed by tours and coffee and cake.
